Informatics and Telematics Institute, Centre for Research and Technology
Hellas (CERTH), GR

CERTH-ITI participates in ELU with the Multimedia Knowledge Group (MKG, mkg.iti.gr).MKG belongs to the Informatics and Telematics Institute (ITI) of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) (http://www.iti.gr).ITI-CERTH was founded in 1998 as a non-profit organisation under the auspices of the General Secretarial of Research and Technology of Greece (GSRT), with its head office located in Thessaloniki, Greece. Since 10.3.2000 it has been a founding member of the Centre of Research and Technology Hellas supervised by the GSRT.

The current research activities of the group cover a wide spectrum of scientific areas :

- Semantic multimedia analysis: techniques to (semi-) automatically extract semantic metadata from multimedia content, mapping of low-level features to high level concepts, concept learning, classification, spatiotemporal segmentation.

- Multimedia indexing and retrieval: extraction of low-level features for multimedia content description, metadata format for higher-level concepts, MPEG-7 standard, search engines for multimedia content, relevance feedback techniques.

- Multimedia and the Semantic Web: integration of multimedia analysis techniques to semantic web approaches, employment of semantic web technologies to improve the performance of multimedia analysis.

- Knowledge structures, languages and tools for multimedia: extension of Semantic Web languages with multimedia descriptions (MPEG-7 features), rules and relations for multimedia analysis.

- Reasoning and personalization for multimedia applications: reasoning techniques to improve multimedia analysis, remove uncertainty and integrate different analysis results, rules and relations from spatiotemporal constraints.

- Image/Video processing and analysis: algorithms for image/video segmentation, scene classification and understanding, video object tracking, spatiotemporal processing - including visual attention techniques - and visual context analysis.

- Knowledge-assisted multimedia analysis and retrieval: content-based semantic retrieval of multimedia information using knowledge adaptation and video summarization.

- MPEG-7, MPEG-21 standards and semantic web technologies.
