  Czech Television was established as a legal entity on 1 January 1992.

Czech Television is a public institution in the area of television broadcasting.

Its principal task is the creation and broadcasting of television programmes in both analogue and digital form by means of terrestrial transmitters and other technical facilities.

By this activity, as well as by programming production and, possibly, by other activities, Czech Television provides services to the public and promotes the development of culture.

Czech television broadcasts two nation-wide channels CT1 and CT2, Teletext 24 hours a day and has been preparing digital terrestrial broadcasting for the Bohemia and Moravia territories.
Czech television has a laboratory for development and investigation of new television technology.

Since 2000 Czech television has been testing digital terrestrial television based on DVB standards including DVB – MHP (Multimedia Home Platform) for interactive television.
 
Czech Television is in charge of :
- creating and broadcasting (distributing) television programmes over the entire territory of the Czech Republic,
- making sound recordings and audiovisual recordings by means of suitable, available technologies,
- creating and maintaining archives and programme libraries and purchasing licenses for the use of audiovisual works recordings from domestic and foreign rights holders
- concluding licensing agreements on the use of its own recordings by other entities in the Czech Republic and abroad;
- organising systematic surveys of viewer response to its programmes,
- ensuring its technological development and actively participating in the promotion of new broadcasting technologies and services as well as co-operating with important organisations or societies active in the field of art and culture;

Czech Television is a member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU/UER), an international association of public service broadcasters, and takes part in the international co-operation of public service television stations.

Czech Television is one of the founders of "People in Need - Public Benefit Organization Attached to Czech Television". Czech Television promotes the development of education and research in fields related to television broadcasting.
