The University of Ljubljana is the major higher education institution in Slovenia, consisting of 20 faculties and 2 academies that currently offer courses to more than 50,000 students in nearly all scientific disciplines.

The team contributing to the TIRAMISU project comes from the Laboratory for Digital Signal Processing, which is a member of the Department of Telecommunications at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.

The main field of expertise of the group is digital signal processing with emphasis on image and video processing, coding, visual object segmentation, recognition, visual perception based algorithms and tracking algorithms.

However, through intensive involvement in international R&D projects during the last decade, the group's profile in terms of fields of expertise has changed significantly in order to meet the requirements and overcome the challenges of past and current international projects.
Digital signal processing is still a fundamental discipline for the group, however new disciplines have become part of our list of expertise. These include networking (IP protocols and services, peer-to-peer protocols, content search and storage in distributed systems, etc), interactive television technologies, personalised multimedia content retrieval and other multimedia related technologies.   Website of the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia

Among other projects, the laboratory has contributed to research efforts

In FP5 the group contributed to three IST projects, namely IST Share it! (interhome TV content distribution networks - peer-to-peer networks), IST MUFFINS (the first implementation of a MPEG 21 compliant system) and IST P2People (An open source, peer-to-peer jxta networking platform that enables common interest search ad P2P collaborative services).

In FP6 the group works on two projects: IST-TIRAMISU (an open standards based Digital Rights Management system for media data) and eContent Content4All (a P2P community platform for tourism related data distribution).

Through the involvement in the projects IST P2People, IST TIRAMISU, IST Share it! etc, the group has gained a considerable experience in P2P networks. In addition the group also masters Java development on mobile devices (J2ME). Furthermore, the group has considerable expertise in crossplatform and cross-technology integration activities, where they can provide the glue logic between services and applications running in heterogenous environments.

Both in the myTV project and the Content4All projects the group has focused on the design and implementation of user profiling and content personalization algorithms for the DVB broadcast setting and the more generic Interner/P2P context, respectivelly.

This work is very relevant for the ELU project where personalization and user-profiling techniques will be employed to provide the learner with an advanced and personalized learning experience. has been a member of several consortia and has jointly conducted applied industrial research with research partners that include : Philips, Nokia, BBC, NOB, IMEC, RAI, Optibase, Fraunhofer Institute, and many others. in the following projects: ACTS SMASH, ACTS STORit (mass storage device for video), IST myTV (the first TV-Anytime compliant iTV system implementation), etc.
